Andy Murray suffered a shock second round exit at the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, losing 7-6 6-3 to American Donald Young in the Californian desert.

Murray's service accuracy was his undoing. His first serve was near unplayable but he faulted more than half the time, opening up his second serve to Young, who dominated with 72% of points on Murray's second effort.

After claiming the first set in a tie-break Young converted three out of three break point opportunities in the second set as Murray failed to fight his was out of trouble in Indian Wells.

It was the first meeting between 143-ranked Young and world No. 5 Murray and one to forget for the British ace.

World No.1 Rafael Nadal showed how it is done by smashing Rik De Voest off the court in an hour.

Nadal lost just six points on his serve as he cruised to a 6-0 6-2 victory and moved into the third round.

Juan Martin del Potro's comeback continued to gather pace as he came through a real test of his credentials with a hard-fought win over defending champion Ivan Ljubicic. Del Potro recently claimed his first title in 18 months at Delray Beach, and is set to climb up the rankings after battling back from a set down to claim a 5-7 6-4 6-2 victory.

Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman continued his stunning run of form to send Marcos Baghdatis crashing out of the competition. Devvarman, who stunned Janko Tipsarevic in the Davis Cup last weekend, sent the 19th seed packing with a 7-5 6-0 victory.

The world No. 84 set up a third-round clash with Belgium's Xavier Malisse, who upset Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(6) 7-5, with the winner earning a potential fourth round clash with top seed Nadal.

David Ferrer was another surprise loser, the sixth seed going out 7-6 6-3 to Ivo Karlovic, while Fernando Verdasco progressed safely as Richard Berankis retired when down 7-5 2-0.
